While the snow was busy melting and Seattle takes its 3 month break from rain and clouds, Bethany and I were busy putting together the very first round of SOS programs in the Pacific Northwest! We ended up with 2 different programs:
First, we worked with Big City Mountaineers and the Cowlitz tribe to take some Learn to Ride graduates on a 5 day backpacking trip to the Olympic Peninsula. Each day we introduced a new core value, new leadership skills, and practiced wilderness skills. It was an amazing experience... check out photos here: http://www.sosoutreach.org/photo/albums/sos-outreach-intro-to-backp...
While I was busy in the Olympics, Bethany created our first "Backyard Adventure" program, focused on introducing University students to activities close to home. They completed 2 service projects, went kayaking and bouldering, and visited the Seattle Aquarium.
Overall, we worked with 12 at-risk kids, and learned a ton of lessons that'll help us make our Summer even bigger and better next year. A huge shout out goes to everyone who made it possible: Our amazing volunteers and supporters, the NW Outdoor Center, The Seattle Bouldering Project, Big City Mountaineers, The Seattle Aquarium, and The Pike Market Food Bank. Now, who's ready for the snow?
