Greetings friends of SOS,
SOS is proud to announce that it will be starting winter programs at Ski Cooper in Leadville, CO. SOS plans to roll out its multi-year “University” curriculum at Cooper. And we are looking for local outdoor enthusiasts interested in serving as a youth mentor (Sherpa) for area youth involved in the program.This is a great opportunity to share your love of the outdoors with youth who would otherwise not have such opportunities.
A bit more about about who we are as an organization - SOS Outreach is a sports-based youth development organization. Our goal is to help build character and self-esteem in underserved youth through outdoors activities. We partner with youth-serving agencies and resorts to provide multi-day programs that incorporate a set of core values (courage, discipline, integrity, wisdom and compassion).

Sherpa:
Sherpas are mentors who work closely with SOS youth for at least one season. Sherpas support their youth through five ride days and various service learning components and life skills workshops.
Sherpa responsibilities include:
•Attending three Sherpa training sessions- general, database and on-hill
•Attending and participating in monthly Sherpa meetings
•Attending and participating in all University events, including rental nights, five ride days, service and life skills workshops
•Maintaining regular contact with each youth participant and their families
•Maintaining regular contact with Eagle County Program Coordinator
•Teaching and modeling the five core values and Mountain Safety Code
•Assisting youth in developing goals and monitoring their progress
•Monitoring students skiing or snowboarding progress
•Ensuring students have appropriate equipment for each activity
•Monitoring attendance and progress of each student through the SOS online database
•Preparing for and facilitating a portion of the end of season graduation
