Improving Quality in Out of School Programs

After spending the last week in Washington D.C. at the Up2Us (www.up2us.org) conference on sports based youth development with other Executive Directors from around the country, it is evident that we are vanguards evolving into professionals in youth development. This area is relatively young and comes with it's challenges.

At SOS we have attempted to expand capacity and impact of our programs through year round and multi year programs. This makes our mission and outcomes more complex.

My focus as executive director is three fold:

1. Improve organizational capacity building
2. Improve adult training for staff and mentors
3. Improve program curriculum

All three areas are interrelated for a sustainable charity and require time away from fundraising and direct services. As a non-profit grows more and more time is spent on administration. SOS and Up2Us is attempting reduce redundancies so you and other non-profits can deliver quality programs.

Here are two studies that elaborate on these problems and offer solutions that SOS is struggling to implement.

Full Belly Fundraising with Mountain Area Taco Bells!

Starting May 26-June 1, if you buy a combo meal from one of the following Taco Bell locations in Colorado (Eagle, Frisco, Glenwood Springs, Rifle), $1 will go to SOS Outreach. Last year Taco Bell raised over $3,000 through this effort for SOS programs and its hoping to double it this year. If you are near one of these Colorado locations over Memorial Day weekend, stop in, fill your belly and help some local kids get outdoors.See More
