There are many volunteer opportunities on and off the mountain with SOS. we have opportunities for volunteers in outdoor youth programs, special events, as well as volunteer positions in youth mentoring and administrative support. If you're interested, please fill out an online application.

Volunteer opportunities at SOS:

Winter Volunteer Needs
SOS Outreach Portland Winter Volunteers-The SOS Portland location is looking for volunteers for the 2011-2012 winter season! Volunteers participate in our Learn to Ride/Ski programs at Mt Hood Meadows, Timberline, and SkiBowl resorts. Volunteers should be able to snowboard comfortably on blue runs, have an interest in helping youth, have patience, be reliable, and pass a criminal background check. Denver Area Adventure Programs(CO)-One or two-day commitment at Breckenridge, Keystone, Vail, Beaver Creek or Winter Park. Program dates available throughout the season, mostly during the week. The Adventure Program provides a first introduction to skiing or snowboarding for 1,000 Denver area youth. Volunteers help the participants get through the rental shop, fitted for appropriate clothing and assist throughout the day during the lessons.

 

Snoqualmie/Seattle Area Learn to Ride (WA) - SOS needs volunteers to help teach participants how to ski and snowboard! Volunteers don't need to have any formal experience teaching or certifications, just the ability to ski or snowboard confidently on at least blue runs and an interest in working with youth! Programs take place on five consecutive weeks, from 3:30pm to 8:30pm on Tuesdays, Wednesdays, and Thursdays.

Learn to Ride/Ski (CO,WA,Tahoe)-Five-day commitment at 11 resorts across Colorado including all Front Range mountains. Program dates available throughout the season, primarily five Saturdays or five Sundays in a row.

University-(CO,WA, Tahoe)Ten-day commitment that includes five days on-hill and a minimum of five days off-hill throughout the season. University features a four year curriculum that incorporates the SOS core values, skiing or snowboarding, community service, leadership and career development trainings and positive mentorship. Mentors are paired with a group of five participants who they complete all on-hill and off-hill days with. They are required to have at least phone contact with their students at least every other week during the season.

 

Year-round Volunteer Needs

 Gypsum Rec. Center, Gypsum, CO- Two hours every two weeks on either a Tuesday or Thursday evening from 6-8pm at the Gypsum Recreation Center.  Volunteers support all aspects of the open climbing nights at the Rec Center.  Volunteers ensure proper documentation, support participant knowledge of equipment and technique, belay interested participants, ensure safety of participants and area, and make sure area is secured and cleaned before leaving.  Belay training will be provided.

 

Summer Program Needs
Rock Climbing (CO)-One-day commitment at sites in Eagle County. Local and regional youth are provided an introduction to rock climbing that includes the core values. Volunteers assist in all aspects of organization and program management.

Monument Trips-Four-day commitment at Colorado National Monument. Fourth grade students, in groups of 40, are introduced to the outdoors through a four day outdoor education program. Volunteers assist with all aspects of program and campsite management.

Wilderness Trips-Seven-day wilderness experiences to introduce youth to Colorado’s wilderness. Trips start with a teams course experience and all groups are responsible for packing the gear necessary for the experience. Volunteers assist with the teams course, gear preparation and in the field.

Office Assistance Volunteer Needs
Inventory and Distribution of Gear-No minimum commitment. All SOS participants are loaned the equipment necessary to complete their adventure activity. Throughout the year, SOS requires assistance with the organization and management of inventory.

Data Entry-No minimum commitment. Participants primarily register online through our client tracking system, and there are always evaluations or registrations that need to be keyed into our system due to lack of internet access for the participants. Volunteers would be hosted at the Denver office and complete entry around their schedule.

Full Belly Fundraising with Mountain Area Taco Bells!

Starting May 26-June 1, if you buy a combo meal from one of the following Taco Bell locations in Colorado (Eagle, Frisco, Glenwood Springs, Rifle), $1 will go to SOS Outreach. Last year Taco Bell raised over $3,000 through this effort for SOS programs and its hoping to double it this year. If you are near one of these Colorado locations over Memorial Day weekend, stop in, fill your belly and help some local kids get outdoors.See More
